When cotton Comes

Synopsis

In 1920’s New York, at the height of the Harlem Renaissance, the legendary Cotton Club allows a woman of color to headline for the first time, where she finds a love that betrays her in a white ex-veteran, a community she never knew she had in the popular Black musicians of the day, and, after a series of personal wounds, a newfound acceptance of both herself and the society she's forced to exist in.

Insight:

I wrote this Stage-play In 2022 when i Felt there was a need for there to be story that REPRESENTs the life of Black artist during the harlem renaissance era. While at the same time atteNding a pwi Private chrisTian college i found myself, as well as my other poc peers, being NEGATIVELY affected by the good intentions/actions of our White peers. though things like that haVe been happening nearly all my lIfe, with always being one-of-two black people in the room, it was heavy on my Mind at that time to tell that story through the Filter of the roaring 20’s.

It is also, always my interest, to tell stories through the sound of jazz, spoken word, and movement.
